Now it gets into the decimals e.g. top 0.5 %

stackoverflow : Answered 1,000 questions

Achievement unlocked!

Most of these are in the Identity space and of course the problem is that in order to answer a question, someone has to ask it first.

It is somewhat of a niche category. I've been on stackoverflow for 9 years and 10 months (at time of writing) so it's taken a while to get here.

Looking at the tags e.g. ADFS:

What's also interesting about this is the other contributors.

Just calling out some of them:

Eugenio Pace and Matias Woloski are the founders of Auth0 and vibronet has recently joined them.

leastprivilege is one of the people behind identityserver.

Across the other tags:

I guess now I need to identify my next achievement!

And onto the next 1,000!

Enjoy!

Stackoverflow : How to treat newbies

Joel Spolsky is writing a series of articles on the evolution of stackoverflow.

Part of this is the treatment of newbies; in particular the arrogant treatment of people who genuinely need an answer but don't know how to ask the question.

Jon Skeet wrote an excellent post on how to ask a question.

The problem arises when they don't know enough to do that.

e.g. "My boss tells me that I need to convert my ASP.NET Membership application to SAML 2.0. I've googled SAML for a whole day and am hopelessly confused".

Now, the standard response on stackoverflow is to close this - too broad - not focused - not a programming question.

All of which is true and this question could also go on serverfault.

But that doesn't help the newbie.

My approach is to say something like:

"OK - you need a SAML stack on the client side. Here's a list of SAML clients, Find one that fits your requirements (language, cost etc.) and read the documentation and samples".

Then I ask what IDP they plan to use?

And depending on that, I may have some more suggestions or links to a good post.

The outcome is that the newbie has something concrete to go on.

(I leave the admin. to other people).

In fact, that's how this blog originally started.

I was answering the same question again and again and so I answered the question in the blog and then posted the link. Major time saving.

The other point is that I can't do their job for them. All I can do is point them in the right direction.

The comments section in stackoverflow is for further questions.

stackoverflow : Privileges

Stackoverflow has levels of privilege. As your reputation goes up, you get to be able to do more.

The top level is 25,000 that I just achieved.

My current ranking is 4242 out of the 8 million odd that have used stackoverflow.

So I need a new goal :-).

I decided that my next goal is to answer 1,000 questions.

Coincidentally, my stats show that I clocked up 750,000 page views as well.

Onwards.

stackoverflow : Finally, the 20,000 rep barrier!

When I started at SO roughly 8 years ago, the highest rep. that gave you extra privileges was 20,000.

so that was always my goal.

However, in writing this, I discovered that they have added a new privilege at 25,000.

It's taken me a while:

but I finally got there.

One of the reasons it's taken so long is that I only answer questions in a very small "obscure" category i.e. around Identity mainly ADFS, SAML and WIF.

I got a big boost from getting a 500 rep. bounty which for a brief instant of time put me into Jon Skeet territory.

i.e. the top 0.01% !!!

(Normally I sit at about 2%).

In  terms of where I sit among the approx 5 million regular SO users (who have rep.):

My badge collection is coming along nicely.

And every now and then I get an extra bonus:

The top non-Microsoft article around MSAL.

OK - that's because it's brand new and there are basically zero articles but hey - I'll take it :-)

So on to 25,000 - only 4,979 to go!

Enjoy!

stackoverflow : People reached

I help a lot of people over at SO and the MSDN forums. The new user pages show how many people your answers, comments etc. have reached.

1.8 million. Pretty neat!

Slowly closing on that magic 20,000 rep. mark when you have all rights. Nice to see that I've worked my way up over the years to get into the top 2%.

Enjoy!

stackoverflow: Writing the perfect question

I've blogged on this before but it bears repeating.

cf Jon Skeet: Writing the perfect question.

There was a question on SO that's a perfect example.

"How do I achieve SSO with site a, site b, WIF and SAML and STS"?

Is site a /b .NET / Java / ...?

What flavour STS?

WIF and SAML are mutually incompatible, Explain.

Are site a / b in different domains? With different identity repositories? If so, what repositories are these? AD or ...?

And so on.

In my experience, the quality of the answer correlates with the quality of the question.

Yeah - I get that people are leaving out important details because they don't really understand the environment.

If so, Google other questions. What details do they supply?

If you want to be noticed in the vast list of SO questions, you have to put some effort in.

Make me want to help you by answering!

Enjoy!

stackoverflow : 500 answers

Finally hit the mark.

If you calculate that I try to answer one question every day and 5 weekdays per week, then:

500 / 5 = 100 weeks ~ 2 years to get here!

Actually, it's taken almost 6 years.

Can do better!

Stackoverflow : 15,000 rep

Well, taken a while but just crossed that boundary!

So I can now:

"protect questions

Privilege type: Moderation privilege
Awarded at: 15,000 reputation"

Only one more privilege to get:

"trusted user
Privilege type: Milestone privilege
Awarded at: 20,000 reputation"

So just a small matter of another 5,000!

Why do I do it? - basically:

  • I like helping people
  • I try and evangelise Identity - and this is a good way to do it
  • I learn something every time I research an answer

Most of the time, I pretty much know the answer but it's that quest for the "perfect" answer that leads to research which leads to me better understanding something.

Also, half the time when I try and explain something I realise I don't understand it as well as I thought I did or as well as I should!

See An Ode to Server Fault for a similar viewpoint.

Enjoy!

stackoverflow : The forum double

In cricket, we have the concept of the “all-rounder’s double” for cricketers who have scored 1000 runs and taken 100 wickets or whatever.

So I set myself the “forum double” of 10,000 points on stackoverflow and 1,000 points on the Microsoft .NET Framework Forums. It’s a LOT harder to get points on the Microsoft forum – trust me.

This is completely arbitrary but what the hell.

The stackoverflow goal was achieved a while back (refer previous posts) but I’ve just achieved the Microsoft one.

Stackoverflow : Top of the tag heap

One of my goals was to get to the top of the "Top Answerers" for a Tag category in stackoverflow and I finally managed to achieve that ...

Problem is: It's more more difficult to stay at the top than get there!

Enjoy!
